How do Octane Boosters work?

Posted on January 6, 2022March 5, 2024 By Nathan Edwards

Increasing the horsepower of a vehicle is crucial to its performance. However, there is something to keep in mind: The more it has, the bigger the chances there are for the engine to break. To prevent this, octane boosters are the best solution.

Before jumping right into it, what does octane mean? This is a term that is used to refer to the quality and effectiveness of gasoline when being burned in an internal combustion engine. In the same vein, the octane rating measures how much gasoline in the engine can resist pinging when the heat rises inside the vehicle.

How do octane boosters protect the vehicle? Simple: by increasing how much of this component is on the engine, thus, preventing combustion. Not only that, but they also protect those that are equipped with turbo and superchargers. Of course, it goes without saying that octane boosters only need to be used if required.

Vehicles with high horsepower engines, which are mostly tuned with a turbocharger, can highly benefit from octane boosters. They prevent them from pinging. To be more specific, they raise the concentration of gasoline that is available for it to burn.

When it comes to the type of vehicles that require octane boosters, it depends on whether or not there are added performance parts. If the car has, for example, a bigger turbo or fuel injectors, the system has a greater risk of exhaustion. This often happens because of the amount of compression that hits the combustion chamber. High pressure of this caliber is bad news for the vehicle, mainly due to detonation. It can cause the pistons to burn up, something that drivers wouldn’t be happy about.

Another detail to take into consideration when using octane boosters is how old the model is. One would think that older vehicles are the ones that need them the most but, surprisingly, this is not the case. Ironically, modern vehicles tend to use octane boosters the most to prevent their high-performance engines from breaking down. The higher the octane rating the type of fuel has, the less likely it is that they would be to experience knocking or pinging. Thus, to say that it is important to use octane boosters to keep them in check would be a major understatement.

Now, before getting an octane booster, it is also important to check if they’re compatible with the vehicle. This is mainly because they don’t tell to mesh well with all models due to changes in the requirements during the manufacturing process.
